Allowance vs. rewards: what works at each age

There's no single right answer, but there is a right answer for your child's age. Younger kids need quick, visible rewards. Older kids are ready to learn about saving and money.

Ages 3–6: quick, visible rewards

Little kids need to see the reward right away. Stickers, a jar of beans or a small treat at the end of the day work better than money they don't understand yet.

Ages 7–10: start saving for something

Kids this age can save toward a goal. Let them earn points or beans for chores and trade them for a reward they chose, like a toy or a trip for ice cream.

Ages 11 and up: real money and real choices

Older kids are ready for an allowance. Many families hold it until the week's chores are done. Let them choose whether to spend or save, and help them plan for bigger goals.

Tips that keep it fair

  • Decide what one reward point is worth in dollars and keep it the same.
  • Pay for extra jobs, not everyday ones like making your bed.
  • Offer to match savings for big goals.
  • Write the rules down so nobody has to remember them.
